Tarlac observes national disability and rehab week
TARLAC
-- The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) under the
Provincial Government of Tarlac has joined the nation in celebrating the 32nd
National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week at the lobby of the
Provincial Capitol here.
With
the theme, “Sa Istrakturang Accessible, Lahat ay Able”, the celebration was aimed
at promoting the accessibility of persons with disabilities (PWDs) towards a barrier-free
environment as stated in the constitution.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is observing the event
every third week of July in coordination with the National Council on
Disability Affairs.
Highlights
of the event include the granting of educational assistance to indigent PWDs
and distribution of assistive devices to selected PWDs.
Vice
Gov. Pearl Angeli E. Pacada and Second District Board Member Danilo Asiaten also
handed financial grants to 53 elementary students, each amounting to P1,500; 37
high school students with P2,000 each; and two college students with P3,000
each.
Twenty-seven
PWDs also accepted different assistive devices like wheelchairs, quad canes,
walkers and crutches. Another 80 students will be given educational assistance
this coming week.
In
a statement, Gov. Victor Yap said he fully supports all PWD activities, saying
that they should be given equal opportunities.
"I am also opening avenues for PWDs in the fields
of education, sports, music, arts, and modern technology," Yap said.
