MAYOR Jerry Pelayo was right when
he made an appeal to school heads and principals to make this year’s graduation
rites off limits to politicians.
This is sad to note, but it is
usually during these events when those running for positions choose to make
their so-called political tantrums –to the detriment of the children who
probably understand nothing of their politicking.
There is actually nothing wrong in
inviting our councilors, vice mayors, mayors, congressmen, board members, vice
governors and governors in attending such happy occasions… but not during the
election period.
This year being an election year
makes it an opportunity for our politicians – incumbents or aspirants – to make
themselves heard.
Some of them would not have a care
in the world who they will be speaking to – as long as they are given a chance
to talk and talk and talk before an audience, even if they are 12 years old and
below.
Graduation rites are supposed to
be solemn and happy occasions for the children and their parents. They should
be a cause for celebration for the graduating students, and for those who will
be recognized for their efforts during the school year.
Let these occasions not be
exploited in any way by anyone’s vested and selfish interests.
Let the graduations rites all over
the country be off limits to politicians.
Pelayo said that graduation rites are
a solemn occasion that should not be exploited by politicians for their vested
interests.
He said this is also a way to help
incumbent and aspiring political leaders to minimize their campaign expenses.
“May mga eskuwelahan kasi na kaya
pala ininvite ang kandidato, hihingan lang pala nila ng electric fan o nang
kung ano. Ginagawang fund raising ang pagtatapos ng mga bata,” he said.
Pelayo noted that if these schools
in Candaba are in need of assistance, the municipal government is very much
willing to help because the money that should be spent belongs to government
funds.
Pelayo urged the school heads to
invite non-politicians but successful alumni to share their educational and
work experiences that could be emulated by the new graduates.
