Teodoro asks NGOs: Help in voters' education campaign

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Lakas-Kampi-CMD presidential
bet Gilbert “Gibo” Teodoro has called on non-government organizations to help
the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in conducting an intensive voter’s
education campaign to ensure the success of automated polls in May this year.
Teodoro, during his talk with
members of the Rotary Club of Southern Pampanga over the weekend, urged the
group members to conduct their own voter’s education, in coordination with the
Comelec, to educate voters on the mechanics of the automated election.
“The Rotary has a more diverse
understanding of local communities, particularly those areas that they serve.
They have the power to reach them and help the Comelec in educating our
people,” Teodoro said.
He said although the Comelec now
training its people in the field, particularly regional election directors and
other election officers to educate the public, more voters’ education campaigns
should be focused in the barangay level.
Teodoro cited the need for the
poll body to be more aggressive in its voters’ education campaign if it wants
the country's first ever fully-automated elections to go smoothly.
He pointed out that the country’s
first automated election is very important where its success hinges on the
people being able to vote and their votes counted.
Hence, he said ensuring that
voters will know how to cast their votes in next year's political exercise is
of great importance. This will prevent voters from being disenfranchised or
their ballots being spoiled.
